Congratulations to B-L Middle School teacher McKenna Palmer and her team for their outstanding achievements at the Lake Murray Polar Plunge this weekend! Their incredible efforts raised more than $5,000 for the Special Olympics, earning them multiple awards including Coolest School and Top Fundraising Team. They also took home honors for having the most team members sign up to take the plunge—what an amazing accomplishment! And true to her word, BLMS Principal Sharah Clark kept her promise for a good cause. This morning, she was up on the school roof, waving to parents during drop-off and spreading cheer with her bullhorn. Way to go, BLMS!

It’s Unified Spirit Week at B-L Middle School and we’re having a blast with the themed dress-up days leading up to the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Saturday, February 8th. (Yesterday was Team Wear Day! Check out the photos to see the themes for the rest of the week.) So far, B-L Middle School has raised an impressive $3,260 for the Special Olympics. As part of the fundraising efforts, a fun competition is underway among the school administrators: Principal Sharah Clark, Assistant Principal Jacob Prahst, and Assistant Administrator Brantley Buzhardt. The administrator who raises the least amount of money will spend an entire day on the roof of BLMS! Currently, Mrs. Buzhardt is in the lead, but there’s still time for the others to catch up before the competition ends on Friday. Stay tuned for the final results!

Over the past year, around 24 students at B-L Middle School have actively participated in the school garden, engaging in various tasks such as building raised beds, sheet composting, planting, watering, and harvesting. The students have successfully completed their first cycle of both cool- and warm-season crops. Their sweet potato plants thrived over the summer, producing an impressive yield of large sweet potatoes. They also grew yellow squash, bush beans, carrots, and beets, which were recently harvested. Currently, students are growing broccoli, which will continue to flourish throughout the cool season, along with newly-planted kale and onions. The school garden has become an excellent opportunity for students to develop teamwork, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. As they observe seeds sprouting, flowers blooming, and vegetables growing, they gain hands-on experience with factors affecting plant life—such as rain, drought, pollinators, and pests. One student, Colt Roundtree, even took the initiative to research and implement natural pest control solutions to manage cabbage worms and ants. This initiative is part of the Clemson Extension School Gardening Program. Great job students!

Exciting news from B-L Middle School! STEM teacher Laura Bishop was recently awarded a Google VEX Robotics grant, providing her students with an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into robotics and compete against other middle school teams across South Carolina. VEX Robotics is a dynamic platform that combines hands-on learning with the excitement of competition, helping students strengthen their STEM skills through building and programming robots. The BLMS Robotics Team is hard at work preparing for their first competition on December 7th. Let’s cheer them on and wish them the best of luck!
